To the Church

The problem of abortion and the church:

From 2021–2022 we sent 270 emails to churches in our region (Northeast USA) regarding abortion & the Church's response, or level of concern.

We asked about the approach each church had taken against abortion - a crisis which has caused the deaths of over 65,000,000 babies in the United States since 1973. Some of our emails offered information & assistance on the topic.

Altogether, we got back 28 emails with a combination of single and compound replies:

  •  5 churches were in favor of abortion
  •  4 churches abstained from any opinion
  •  4 churches prayed about it
  •  3 churches were involved in adoption & foster care programs
  •  2 churches attended the annual March for Life
  •  2 churches were “prolife” but had taken no action/had no plan
  •  2 pastors preached a special sermon on Sanctity of Life Sunday
  •  2 church offered hope & encouragement
  •  1 pastor participated in a Summit before the March for Life
  •  1 church encouraged prolife voting
  •  1 church said they could be doing more
  •  1 church holds each member responsible for personal accountability before God. (This sounds like finger-pointing, not shepherding.)

And in addition to the above responses:

  • 15 churches also reported that they support Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs) “to end abortion.”

So, we contacted 40 active PRCs ...

Pregnancy Resource Centers

We called 40 active PRCs

“What is the primary thing pregnant women ask for when they contact you?”

“What is the primary thing pregnant women ask for when they contact you?”

This is a summary of what they told us:

“What is the primary thing pregnant women ask for when they contact you?”

“What is the primary thing pregnant women ask for when they contact you?”

“What is the primary thing pregnant women ask for when they contact you?”

We received multiple answers from most centers in response to the question, above:

  Pregnancy Confirmation = 36

Material & Financial Support = 29

Discuss Pregnancy Options (ie: carry, adopt, abort) = 16

 STD/STI Testing = 07

Medical Referral = 08

Education & Support Groups = 17 Social Services Ref./Domestic = 01

"What kind of religious counseling do you provide for clients?"

“What is the primary thing pregnant women ask for when they contact you?”

"What kind of religious counseling do you provide for clients?"

Some did not respond to the question at the top of this column. The answers we were given follow:

No Religious Counseling = 04

Multifaith Counseling = 05

Exclusively Christian Counseling Lead by Center = 04

Referrals for Spiritual Counseling =   02

Mentoring by Local Church = 02

Christian if requested by client = 06

Multifaith if requested by client = 05

yes there is a problem

PRCs offer mercy services to pregnant women, who for the most part, intend to carry their babies. They are not consistent in initiating the Gospel (10%). The Church has blindly mistaken their activity for "ending abortion," rather than that of providing material & social support.
